YOUR CHILD\u2019S SPEECH<\/span> AND<\/span> LANGUAGE<\/span> AT<\/span> 3<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Although\u00a0there\u2019s a wide range of \u201caverage\u201d at this age, here are some developmental markers to look for in a three year old child\u2019s language development:<\/i><\/u><\/p>\n

\u2022 Can match colors and can label at least one color if not two or three.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Knows some temporal concepts such as: night, day, yesterday, lunchtime, tonight.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Knows some quantitative concepts such as: one, some, rest, all. \u2022 Knows some spatial concepts such as: in, out, on, off.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Knows some descriptive words such as: big, little, soft and primary colors.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Follows simple one step directions.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Has a sentence length of 3-4 words.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Has a vocabulary of nearly 1000 words.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Can produce consistently the following sounds: m, n, ng, p,b, h,w.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Can talk about activities at school, can relate an idea or observation to someone.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Often repeats words or phrases he or she has heard.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Can recite or sing one to two lines form a nursery rhyme or song.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Can stay with one activity for eight to ten minutes.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Asks \u201cwhat\u201d questions frequently.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Has a beginning understanding of \u201cwho\u201d, \u201cwhat\u201d and \u201cwhere\u201d questions.<\/p>\n

You can stimulate your child\u2019s speech and language by: <\/u><\/i><\/p>\n

\u2022 Extending his\/her conversation.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Encouraging your child to tell stories using books and pictures.<\/p>\n
