Questions:

  • Topic 1: What are the four fundamental forces of nature? What distance/scale do each of the forces work on? Explain what each of them are, and how they compare in strength. What does each force help “keep together”?
  • Topic 2: Draw and explain the band of stability. What neutron to proton ratio do small atoms prefer? How does this change as atoms get larger? Why does the band of stability end?
  • Topic 3: Define radioactivity and radioisotopes. Who discovered radioactivity? Describe the three different types of nuclear radiation. How do they change an atom? Which of the four fundamental forces is overcome during each type of radiation?
  •  Topic 4: Define radioactive decay. Why is it called “decay”? Identify and describe the three different types of radioactive decay. Why does decay occur and how does each type change an atom?
